Meet our new collection of impossibly soft knits in coastal-inspired colors.
Oh hey, we make absurdly soft clothes that are good for people and the planet. On the coast the marine layer is the soft grey cloud that sits low over the water in the morning and lifts by lunch. This page works the same way: it starts in the fog and clears one layer at a time as you scroll.
Fall starts at the water line, so we read the store like a tide table: what is coming in, what is going out, and what is worth wading into. Tees + Long Sleeves go closest to the skin. The Rugby Edit is the in-between layer, soft, dreamy, and brand new. The Last Call racks are for the day you want a markdown on something you already love.
Specifically, in a freezing dorm room in Maine. It was the first time I ever saw Endless Summer, and the nostalgic glow of California convinced me to pack it all up and head West, to San Francisco.
That’s where my girlfriend “accidentally” threw out my softest vintage tee, and set me on a mission to recreate it. Soon, that turned into a whole collection of absurdly soft clothes inspired by the timeless, golden days in California. And the rest, as they say, is history.
That is the whole brief for this page. A tee, a coast, a feeling of being warm in the cold. Everything below is a layer on top of that one idea.
In Pursuit of the Good Life
In a nutshell, we’re a small but dedicated group of friends working to make every day feel more like the weekend. We do it by creating clothes and experiences that help people enjoy life more, and have a surprisingly good time doing it. (Our Halloween party is legendary.)
We’re always teaching ourselves and learning from each other.
We don’t freak out, we figure it out
We’re flexible and always willing to lend a hand.
We do what needs to be done, whether it’s in our job description or not
We move quickly and punch above our weight
Take Care of Our People: Our team, customers and the rest of the people on Earth.
Fourth layer: coastal merino
The Coastal Merino Collection
Impossibly soft knits, inspired by the coast
Introducing our new Coastal Merino wool. Spun from 100% extrafine merino fibers, and specially washed for impossible softness. Never itchy, no break-in period, just a fabric that feels luxurious from the first wear.
Also in the family: the Coastal Merino Turtleneck Sweater at $188, which comes in 4 colors.
Coastal Merino Crewneck Sweater$158Comes in 7 colors
Coastal Merino Crewneck Cardigan$188Comes in 5 colors
Donegal Fair Isle Sweater$188Comes in 3 colors
The iconic Fair Isle sweater, with a new California twist. Impossibly soft, cozy, and made with 100% extrafine merino wool.
We love the look of a vintage Fair Isle, but couldn’t stand the itchy wool. So we reinvented it our way: with a modern pattern, incredibly soft extrafine merino wool, and classic bomber collar. The feel is thick but luxuriously soft, and it’s dyed in colors inspired by the California coastline. It’s the kind of sweater that elevates your whole wardrobe, and stays with you through the years.
Fifth layer: the art of it
The Art of Layering
Essential styles for fall, from wool to waxed canvas.
A marine layer is a stack of cool, soft cloud that sits on the coast until the sun lifts it off. Dressing for it works the same way. Something thin against the skin, something woolly in the middle, something waxed or quilted on top, and the freedom to peel one off when the fog burns away.
Wool, waxed canvas, quilting, corduroy and a little suede, listed the way the shelf lists them. Nothing is rounded and nothing is bundled: this is the price of each piece on its own.
When the fog sits in for the afternoon, the middle layer does the work. Suri alpaca comes as a crewneck, a v-neck and a cardigan, each shown here in two colorways so you can see how the knit moves. The crewneck is the priciest of the three, and the v-neck and the cardigan share one price.

Ninth layer: a letter
A Letter From Our Founder on Why We Started Re-Spun
When I started Marine Layer almost 10 years ago, the goal was to make the best shirt we could.
But as we gained a better understanding of the apparel industry and its negative impact on the environment, it became clear that we had to do more than just make great clothes and not go broke. We needed to figure out a way to be part of the solution.
Over the years we tried lots of things (including a hideous recycled t-shirt bag) but struggled to figure out how to make a substantial positive impact. Turns out, our fatal flaw was not coming up with a solution that involved our customers.
That's why we're so excited about Re-Spun. It's the only recycling program around that leverages the incredible power of our community.
The first month brought 10,000 shirts. 10 months later we're at 100k. Hopefully, this is just the beginning!
Thanks to everyone who has participated. And to everyone who read this far down in our message.
We’re proud to be one of the few Certified B Corp apparel companies. (It’s kinda a big deal.) From our materials to our partners, we look for ways to do good along the way.
Sustainability isn't a side project for us. It’s part of who we are.
A claim is only a layer of fog until something sits under it. These four pages show where the work happens, from the fabric to the factory to the donation bin.
Our Re-Spun ProgramWe don’t just make clothes, we help to recycle them into new styles with our one-of-a-kind Re-Spun program.
Our own materialsWe don’t just design clothes, we make our own materials too. We’ve developed literally hundreds of absurdly soft fabrics over the years, which is why our clothes feel as good as they look.
Our partnersWe require that all our manufacturing partners sign our code of conduct. In addition, we use third-party certifications and audits from other reputable sources to ensure we're working with responsible partners.

Our Favorite Sustainable Brands
The last year at Marine Layer has been more focused on sustainability than ever before. While upcycling is new to us, other brands were founded on it. This month, we want to highlight some of our favorite companies in the upcycling space doing big things with old materials. To celebrate, we are teaming up with Indosole, Sunski, and Rareform to giveaway some product and spread the message of sustainability.
Indosole
Indosole was founded in response to the huge amount of tire waste in Indonesia. Indosole intercepts tires before getting to landfills and cuts them into unique, durable shapes to be repurposed as shoe soles.
Sunski
Sunski makes their frames from recycled scrap plastic, a practice that didn’t previously exist in the sunglass industry.
Rareform
What happens to the thousands of billboards you see off the side of the highway after the lease expires? Rareform repurposes 50,000lbs of that material each month and turns it into bags.
Big shoutout to each of these brands for breaking the mold and contributing to a conscious consumer economy.

Twelfth layer: the bay
Born & Based in San Francisco
We’re still here in the city where we were founded. HQ’s just a stone’s throw from the Bay. If you’re in town, swing by Chestnut Street and see where we opened our first store.
Stop by and feel the softness.
The people behind the counter are the same ones behind the clothes.
We take our craft seriously. Ourselves? Not so much.
We shot our Fall Preview catalogue in Joshua Tree. Here's our five favorite spots from the trip.
The Station
First stop was the Station at Joshua Tree. It used to be a dusty old gas station, but today it serves up a different type of road trip fuel - coffee and snacks.
It’s also home to eclectic goodies, souvenirs, and a 20-foot-tall cowboy statue named “Big Josh.”
The Joshua Tree House
Our home base for the weekend was the Joshua Tree House. A couple redesigned the house together and now list it on airbnb.
It also has a pretty sick record collection. For those less old-fashioned listeners that don’t travel with a record player for some reason, you can always check out their Spotify.
Hidden Valley
The house was a quick trip from the west entrance of Joshua Tree National Park, where we shot in Hidden Valley.
It’s a one-mile loop trail that winds around massive boulders, and looks even better in Golden Hour lighting.
Salvation Mountain
We also stopped by Salvation Mountain, a massive art exhibit created by local resident Leonard Knight. It looks like a Dr. Seuss book come to life.
This 50-foot high, 150-foot long monument is made from adobe clay and donated paint and is honestly pretty slippery if you’re not careful.
Pro tip: wear a blue-and-white raglan here to win at hide-and-seek.
Moorten Botanical Garden
Next, we stopped by the Moorten Botanical Garden. Home of the world’s first Cactarium. Take that your next Trivia night.
You can ever buy some of the cacti to carry home with you. Let’s take a moment to be thankful for bicycle baskets.
Not every layer is a coat. When the sun finally wins, the bottom half of the outfit carries the day, along with a polo that can still take a cardigan over it. The Lexi Rib Pointelle Longsleeve Scoop Tee is $46 and the Luxe Jersey Rugby Polo is $118.
Lucy Drawstring Pant$148
Gia Oxford Midi Skirt$128Wine check
Gia Oxford Midi Skirt$128Navy bronze check
Liam Long Sleeve Sweater Polo$158Burgundy multi stripe
Fifteenth layer: next to skin
Not itchy, we checked
Your new favorite pair of boxer briefs have entered the chat. We wanted to think of these as the cold-weather cousin to the ultra-breathable Air Boxers you know and love. Same breathability and comfort, but with extra comfort thanks to a touch of extrafine merino wool in the fabric. About time you upgraded your drawers, don’t you think?
The Coastal Merino Boxer Brief is $38, and the fabric reads like a label should: 70% recycled polyester, 14% merino wool, 9% modal, 7% spandex. The new fabric feels soft to the touch but stretches just the way you want. Plus, we gave it a thicker waistband so it feels good even at the end of the day.

Dark Cedar StripeOne stripe, two views of the same sweater.
Crewneck CardiganThe same cardigan with the buttons done up.
Sixteenth layer: the hang tag
Before you go, read the tag
A note from Danilo: I built this concept like a weather report for a brand that already sounds like one. Fog first, then sun, and every section a layer you can take off. The details below are the small print on the tag, in the brand’s own words.

The kind of gift they’ll put on right away and wear for the rest of the day. Probably the next day, too.
It’s not the size of the gift that matters. Especially if you have to fit it into a sock.
